FAQs

Q. What are the benefits of counselling?

A. Counselling primarily allows clients to establish a powerful self-healing relationship with a skilled and caring therapist. Being heard and understood by a genuinely caring person, without the risk of judgment or social repercussions, provides enormous healing potential. The confidentiality of the client-therapist relationship further helps in the creation of a safe space for the client to explore those thoughts and feelings that they might otherwise repress for fear of condemnation. Through counselling, clients can also expand their coping resources. Psychologists are skilled in listening and intervening with range of appropriate evidence-based techniques to assist clients in managing their issues.

Q. Do you bulk-bill under Medicare?

A. Yes, bulk-billing is routinely available if you have a GP referral and Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP).  A MHCP provides up to 10 counselling sessions per calendar year – six sessions followed by a GP review, and then the possibility of another four sessions. Bulk-billing effectively means no out-of-pocket expenses.

Q. What is an Employee Assistance Program? How do I know if I’m eligible?

A. Many organizations offer their employees an Employee Assistance Program. This program is confidential off-site counselling to help with work-related and personal issues. A set number of counselling sessions is provided at no cost to the employee.  Sunshine Coast Psychology is registered with major EAP agencies. Consult your HR office or supervisor to find out if your employer provides EAP. If they do, contact the EAP agency to register (note you can then specifically ask for a consultation with Dr Amanda Willemyns at Sunshine Coast Psychology).

Q. Are private health insurance rebates available?

A. It depends on your policy, so it’s best to check with your private health insurance provider to see if you’re covered for psychology services.

Q. What is your cancellation policy?

A. A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is generally required for appointment changes, otherwise a cancellation fee of 50% of the session fee may apply. Note that EAP agencies have their own cancellation policy, where in general if more than 24 hours notice of appointment changes is not forthcoming, the session is forfeited.

Q. Are you close to public transport?

A. The office of Sunshine Coast Psychology is a short 5-10 minute walk from the Maroochydore Bus Station (on Horton Parade, outside Sunshine Plaza).

Q. Where do I park?

A. Street parking is available in Ocean Street and Duporth Avenue. A council car park is close by in Duporth Avenue (near corner of Ocean St). The Big Top shopping centre next door also offers three hours of free parking to customers.
